Chapter 5
Exhausted, Usagi fell asleep curled up next to his
warm body. She woke sleepily an hour or so later to find herself curled up
around her pillow on Rei’s floor instead of Endymion’s large body. Had she not
felt the soreness of her body and the texture of the sheets against her bare
skin she might have thought it had been just another one of her dreams. But it
had been real enough.
She sat up, holding the sheets to her body for
coverage and looked around the room. Morning light had already cast shadows and
spots of golden light all over the room. Makoto, Rei, and Mina still slept
quietly, seemingly unaware that she had not slept there most of the night.
She walked to
the bathroom and took a warm, relaxing shower before any of her friends woke
up. It relaxed her sore body a little but didn’t do too much to clear her
frenzied mind. When she walked out dressed, and ready to face yet another day,
which would undoubtedly be as strange as the ones previous to this, her friends
were sitting up looking at her oddly.
“What?” she asked suspiciously.
“It’s early, on a Saturday, and you’re up!” Rei
exclaimed. “What happened?”
At that loud announcement, Mina rolled over in bed and
sat up sleepily.
“What do you mean?” Usagi feigned innocence but was
unable to hide the rise of blood to her face as the memory of what had happened
came to mind as a silent inner reply to Rei’s question.
“Something happened,” Rei announced. “I can tell by
the look on your face.”
“I have no
idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’re such a bad liar,” Makoto snapped.
Usagi winced. Makoto couldn’t be more wrong. She was a
very good liar when she had to be. She’d proven that fact along time ago.
“So…” Rei snapped impatiently.
“I…” Usagi paused, unsure of how or if to continue.
“He came last night.”
All eyes went wide.
“And?” Rei demanded.
“We…. you know,” Usagi replied embarrassed.
All three girls’ mouths fell open in shock.
“You lost your virginity?” Makoto screeched
“Here?” Mina added in a similarly shocked tone.
Usagi rolled her eyes. “Of course not!” she snapped.
It’s not exactly something you could have slept through.” Faces flushed all
around including your own.
“Soooo…?” Rei demanded and Mina shared her curious
look.
“What?”
“Details!”
Usagi gasped indignantly. “I am not going to give you
any details!”
“Well at least tell us how it went!” Makoto demanded.
“Yeah, was it good?” Rei asked.
“Rei! You really do ask the most obnoxious questions.”
Usagi snapped.
Rei rolled her eyes at Usagi’s obvious avoidance. She
fixed her with a pointed look that let her know there was no escaping the
question.
“It was really
good ok! Better than I remembered.”
“You remembered having sex with him?” Mina asked
incredulously
“Sex with Endymion isn’t something you forget easily.”
Usagi wondered when her skin would return to a normal shade and temperature.
“You had sex with Endymion?” Ami screeched hysterically
as she entered the room. All eyes turned to stare at her as she looked at Usagi
in shock. In typical Ami fashion she hadn’t wasted any time in bed and had
gotten dressed and come over as soon as she’d woken up.
“Usagi got laid last night,” Mina announced cheerfully
as though the joyous event had been her experience.
“What!” Ami snapped in shock. “You mean he… that you…”
she took in a deep breath. “You used protection right?” Ami demanded.
Everyone froze and all eyes turned to Usagi.
“In a manner of speaking,” Usagi said hesitantly. “I
had to improvise. Endymion would just love it if I got pregnant. It would give
him prime excuse to control my life.”
“And sleeping with him doesn’t?” Ami asked
skeptically.
Usagi looked at her oddly. She hadn’t realized how
protective and cautious Ami could be on her behalf sometimes, enough that it
occasionally countered what everyone considered normal behavior for her.
“It didn’t before.”
“That was when you were older, royal and had an entire
kingdom behind you,” Rei stated.
“Don’t worry about me. I can take care of myself,”
Usagi said forcefully.
“Exactly how
did you improvise?” Rei questioned skeptically. “I know you didn’t buy
anything and like you said, he wouldn’t care.
“I used the crystal,” Usagi replied.
“You used the crystal as birth control?” Ami asked
doubtfully.
“In a way,” Usagi replied. “I tried to force my
ovulation cycle off schedule, speed up the process.”
“That’s risky,” Ami said, concerned.
“I know. There’s a chance it didn’t work very well and
even if it did work it’s not exactly the most reliable method but it’s the best
I could do in a short time.”
“And what will you do next time?” Makoto asked.
Usagi glared. “Assuming there’s a next time, I
guess I’ll have to figure something out. I should have a little time though. If
my plan works I should get my period tomorrow at the latest.”
“Anyway, I’d really appreciate it if we’d stop
discussing my sex life now,” Usagi demanded regally.
“Ok, here’s what I want to know,” Makoto began. “How
exactly did you and Endymion meet, fall in love and get caught up in all this
complicated business?”
Usagi was
silent for a moment. “Well actually Mako, it was your fault.”
“Me?” She screeched incredulously.
“Yes,” Usagi replied, smiling nostalgically at the
memory. “I kept complaining that I was bored with my life and if I remember
correctly we were all bemoaning the fact that our lives had been rather dull
and unremarkable. I was going to be getting married soon and all opportunities
for excitement would disappear.
“We were standing on the balcony of Mina’s apartments
overlooking the inner garden when we saw Endymion walking around. Luna was
giving him the grand tour. I believe that’s when you mentioned that he could be
something exciting, an idea I thought, at the time, was completely ridiculous.
We’d been talking about him and his disrespectful behavior towards my mother. I
suppose, in a snobbish manner, I was rather upset that a backward Terran,
Prince Royal or not, would dare to raise his voice and oppose my mother.”
“The reaction of the court was… unusual. My mother
didn’t seem too upset by his behavior. She said he was a passionate ruler. We’d
all thought he was just crude. The council wanted him off the Moon as soon as
possible and the rest of the court was caught between disgust and unabashed
adoration.”
“You, Mako, decided that we should teach him a lesson
and we came up with this plan.”
“What was the plan?” Mina questioned excitedly,
getting into the mood of the story.
“Now that I look back on it, it was really quite
silly.”
“Don’t insult my plan!” Mako snapped defensively.
“What was it?”
“Well you thought we should get him to believe the
palace was haunted by using our powers. Since I could teleport on my own, I
would of course be the one to carry out most of the work. So we worked out this
plan where I would randomly appear and disappear when he was around, making
sure no one else saw me.”
“But why would he assume that it was a ghost? He has
powers of his own. Wouldn’t he guess that someone was playing tricks on him?”
Ami asked.
“We hadn’t thought of that because we really didn’t
expect anyone from earth to have any real powers. We weren’t very familiar with
Terrans but it was common knowledge that they were very superstitious,” Usagi
replied.
“So we went to my rooms and began sorting through my
clothes to find something that would make me look ‘ethereal’. Of course Mina
came up with the most indecent outfit and I hesitantly agreed to wear just my
thin white underdress and a transparent flowing white robe that had been one of
the gifts given to me by Mael’s mother.”
Mina looked smug. She also had the excited look of a
child at the feet of a storyteller.
“Of course, you guys were supposed to help me out by
performing little tricks like shutting off power to his room, lighting candles
randomly…” Usagi gave them a teasingly accusing glare, “little tricks to scare
and confuse. Unfortunately, you got sidetracked by a call from my mother at the
last minute, so I wound up doing the whole haunting thing by myself. I wasn’t
sure I wanted to go through with the whole thing unless you guys helped, but
then I remembered my wedding and my future and it just all seemed so dull that
anything to liven things up a bit would have been spectacular.
“I let my hair down so he wouldn’t recognize it. We
hadn’t been formally introduced but I was sure he’d seen me around. It was late at night when I first visited
and I knew he’d recently retired to his rooms so I teleported unto the balcony
of his apartments and peeked in to get an idea what he was doing. I made a few
weird noises, rattled the doors a bit, and when he got up to check I let him
catch a half second glimpse before I disappeared.”
“After that I let him see me in the gardens and
another time in the hot houses. There was only one drawback to the entire
plan.”
“What was that?” Mina questioned
“Endymion and I had never met and we’d never spoken to
each other nor had he spoken to any of you so there was no way to know whether
he was scared or confused or anything of the sort which made the whole thing
somewhat redundant. So I took it upon myself to take things a step further and
I waited until he was sleeping before I transported myself to his rooms.”
“I guess I wasn’t prepared to actually be physically
attracted to him but he just looked incredible while he was sleeping I couldn’t
stop staring at him or getting closer to him. I didn’t even realize what I was
doing but I kept getting closer and then suddenly he opened his eyes and
grabbed at me. I pulled away but he got my robe and I teleported away without
it.”
“Well I guess that pretty much eliminated any idea of
you being a ghost,” Amy commented.
“Yeah, I would say so. I didn’t tell you guys about
the robe and I guess you’d all forgotten about the plan with other things on
your mind. We were good friends but we weren’t as close then as we are now.”
The girls looked surprised at that.
“Why?” Makoto asked.
“I was a different person then, an only child with a
busy mother. I was more independent and you guys didn’t come into my life until
I was ten and you had your specific duties so I guess I didn’t confide in you
much back then. Which is why I didn’t tell you that I went back to his rooms
after he took my robe. I still have a hard time explaining why even to myself.
I guess I just wanted to see him again.
“I teleported into his rooms again and he was laying
in bed, same as before. I didn’t want to get too close in case he woke up again
but then I decided he must have been sleeping so I leaned over him to get a
better look and he disappeared right before my eyes. I was so stunned I was
frozen until I felt his arms around me and I instantaneously realized he’d
never for a moment thought I was a ghost.”
Usagi’s eyes suddenly went wide with realization.
“That’s why he did it,” she whispered.
“Did what?” Rei asked in confusion.
“The way Endymion visited me this week, he was
reminding me of how I visited him, how we first met.”
“That’s so sweet,” Mina murmured and everyone stared
at her as though they’d found an alien among them.
Usagi looked at her incredulously. “Strangely enough I
have never for a moment considered the name Endymion and sweet in the same
sentence.”
“I know that it’s a strange question, especially after
having seen him, but apart from his spectacular physical traits, and with
consideration to the fact that you haven’t really said anything particularly
nice about him, and that he hasn’t exactly shown himself to be a nice guy, why
do you love him?” Ami asked.
Usagi was
mentally frozen. For a moment it seemed her mind went into overdrive in search
for an answer but it was a bit too much.
“I… I never said…I’ve never told Endymion that I love
him.”
The response was wide-eyed surprise all around.
“But you do right?” Mina asked.
Usagi hesitated to answer. She wasn’t sure herself.
There was no doubt that she wanted him but that didn’t mean she was in love
with him. “I don’t know.” She replied quietly.
“But he loves you,” Makoto stated.
“I don’t know that either,” Usagi whispered. In fact
she could easily be convinced he didn’t now and had never really.
“But he said it took him millennia to get over his
feelings for you,” Mina pointed out.
“He has never even hinted at what those feelings were,
apart from lust that is.”
“So what happened after he found you?” Rei asked
switching the subject back to the story.
Usagi gratefully accepted Rei’s change of subject.
“Well basically he accused me of spying which I
vehemently denied only to realize after I started rambling that he’d trapped me
into telling him the whole plan. And to cut a long story short he decided to
give me all the excitement I was looking for,” she finished blushing.
“Usagi!” Mina and Makoto yelled at once.
Usagi sighed, realizing she’d have to give them more
than that. “Well as I said, he cleverly trapped me into telling him about our
plan to make him think the palace was haunted and that I was just looking for
something to do to spice up my boring life. Then he kissed me and he told me
that he could show me all the excitement I could ever dream of and he...” she
paused with an embarrassed look on her face.”
“…felt you up,” Rei finished again much to Usagi’s
chagrin
“Cut that out!” Usagi snapped.
“Well it seems that every time you two get together
the end result is always those three little words.”
Usagi closed her eyes, overcome with embarrassment.
“Well thank you so much for finishing that up Rei,”
Usagi muttered sarcastically. “I don’t need to tell you that it wasn’t long
before I was transporting to Earth and occasionally he transported to the Moon
so we could be together. It’s like an addiction,” she finished somberly.
“It’s very strange but we have rarely ever agreed on
anything. When we weren’t in bed we spent a lot of time arguing. It’s not that
we never had our moments, but everything between us was always bogged down with
politics and the lies we told everyone. That’s why I wonder if there was ever
anything but sex.”
“Did you want more than that?” Rei questioned.
“Maybe. But it was never an option.”
“It is now,” Mina offered up.
“Somehow I’m not so sure it is,” Usagi replied.
It was middle day before Rei, Makoto, and Mina saw fit
to get out of bed and get dressed. They decided to spend a relaxing day
together at the mall. Usagi however, found she had to leave shopping and
friends behind early. She had never been happier about feeling sick and being
in pain in her life.
Her improvisation had worked and now she was suffering
the solely feminine joy of menstrual cramps. It wasn’t so much about not being
pregnant as much as knowing that her little experiment with the crystal had
worked. Using the crystal for small things was at times like trying to kill a
fly by dropping a house on it. It was a relief to know that she had the
necessary control to manipulate it and the faith to use it on herself.
If there was a
next time between her and Endymion she was simply going to have to find access
to a new and more reliable method of birth control much like she had so long
ago. Of course stealing a year’s supply of birth control seemed less
reprehensible when your mother was sovereign of most of a solar system and had
more than a few hospitals with her name on it. She was going to either have to
be more creative or convince Endymion to be logical.
The moment she’d gotten home, she’d curled up in bed
with a heating pad. The soreness from the previous night was now amplified by
the arrival of her period. She was miserable.
She fell asleep late in the afternoon despite her
pain. She was surprised when she awoke and glanced over at the digital clock,
staring at it for a good minute until the bleariness cleared and she could see
the bright red numbers stating clearly that it was after 3 am. She’d slept
through dinner. It was only to be expected, as the weariness that resulted from
her recent lack of sleep had taken over.
As her eyes focused and got used to the darkness of
the room, she looked around and realized for the first time that the wicker
chair in the corner, normally covered with stuffed animals and discarded
clothing was now at the foot of her bed and in it sat the cause of her pain.
She groaned.
“You’re awake,” he stated simply.
“No I’m not,” she grumbled. “Go away.”
He didn’t move or respond but she rolled over and
pretended to ignore him. She could still feel the heat of his eyes on her. She
wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep with him just sitting there watching her.
She wasn’t sleepy anyway but she refused to admit that.
“Stop looking at me!”
He still said nothing. A few more silent moments
passed.
“What do you want?” Usagi growled.
“I believe you already know the answer to that,” he
answered.
“I hate to disappoint you but there is absolutely no
chance of that happening. I’m in pain and I blame you for a good portion of
it.”
“I forgot you’d be a virgin again.” He sounded almost
apologetic.
“That is not the pain I’m talking about,” she
muttered. “I have my period ok?” she snapped.
She could almost feel his thoughtful frown.
“Ahh. I remember that little trick of yours.” If she
didn’t know better she’d think he was amused. “Having my child was always a
distasteful idea to you.”
“That’s not true. It was a bad idea back then and it’s
just as bad an idea now. Maybe when you finally connect to the fact that
thousands of years have passed you’ll realize that I’m only sixteen years old,
I live with my parents and I’m in high school! And those are only half the
reasons we shouldn’t.”
He said nothing and she felt nothing coming from him.
In fact the room was so quiet she almost believed he wasn’t there. After a few
moments he got up and walked over to her bed.
“What are you doing?”
“Roll over.”
“What are you trying to do?”
“Roll over.”
She could see he wasn’t going to debate with her. She
rolled unto her back. He pulled the covers away. He pulled up her shirt and
pressed his hand to her lower stomach. She felt warmth permeating from her
stomach out to her entire body and could see a soft glowing light beneath his
hand. She gasped softly.
He smiled and moved his hand away. The pain was gone;
she felt a little inebriated and sleepy. He caressed her cheek gently as her
eyes closed heavily.
“Goodnight, Bunny,” he whispered.
